Nine Inch Nails

We had a very fun time sifting through our classroom’s waste!  We had set up this experiment to find out how much waste we produce.  There was a lot of it after a week: Here are 2 graphs showing the results from our investigation.  From these results, what statements can you say about the waste we produce as a class?

How much of this waste could actually be recycled? 

If we produce this much waste over a week, how much would we produce over a term? 

How much waste can you estimate the whole school makes over a term?  What about a whole year?

What can we do about it?

Today it is ‘Figure it out Friday’ a day I intend to dedicate to problem solving in mathematics.  We looked at the Sustainability Figure it Out book where it asks us is rubbish a problem?  It was a decent question to ponder.   There was a lot of fence sitting.  We took out our disposable gloves and went rummaging through rubbish.  What did we find?  Is rubbish a problem?  Next week we are going to set up an investigation that will analyse what we are throwing out every day.  How will this add up over a week, a term, a year times 14 classes.
